Ladies Discussion Topic No. 3,268,656,236: Matching Underwear Sets

A dream of mine, since I saw this done on Oprah a million years ago, has been to redo my entire "top drawer" with fabulous, unique and quietly sexy matching sets of delicates. I don't know about you, but I am one of those girls who strives to be the matchy-matchy bra-and-panty types, yet never has been. I just can't seem to get it together ... literally.

Which makes perusing Anthropologie's lingerie section practically unbearable, for a myriad of reasons that I need to publicly list. First, the pieces are gorgeous and quite "come-hither" in a 1920's French Gamine sort of way -- which, BTW, is completely opposite of Victoria's Secret sexy. Every set here is absolutely fabilis. & not one bra promises to lift, separate, or have hidden pumps, wires, or secret chambers filled with water (do we remember the water bra, ladies? OMG), air, gel, [insert-goofy-bust-enhancing-item-here], etc...

Reason #2 why Anthro's picks kill me is the price. Ugh. As much as I want to redo the underwear drawer, I am so not willing to do so for at or around $100 per gorgeously French Gamine set. I just can't do it. Reason #3 why I'm tortured is that Anthro secretly knows that I literally have a real affection and weakness for tap pants. Tap pants are the anti-thong and I love them for it. & tap pants are sexy in that ---- wait for it ---- French Gamine sort of way! Seriously, you can have a bum and a half but how sexy are you in a pair of silk tap pants? & where else can you literally find them?? They are a rare gem, ladies. But then when I see gorgeous tap pants like the pair above, I must revert back to Raison Deux above, which says that I must now justify $50-$100 for a pair of knickers. & then I get sticker shock and close my browser. It's sad.

In closing as if to throw salt in my wounds, Anthro offers up these two silk underpinnings. I'm sorry but that slip is to die for. I want to be that gal who wears a slip under my dresses. I think it's a retro custom that we just don't do anymore (well most of us, anyway) and that should be revived! While the slip is gorgeous, the romper trumps it. Well, except when you have to go powder your nose. That's a pain in the derriere.

*Sigh* Guess I'll continue to dream for the perfect top drawer.

  1. Interesting topic. I am one of the matchy matchy types wearing not only bra and panty matched sets but also matchy matchy to the outfit. It's funny because i'm more willing to pay for nice underclothes, chemises, and so forth and than some clothes. :) I like snazzy from the underwear to the outwear. :) I will have to take a look at the Antropologie pieces (even though i prefer underwire in my bras.)

What keeps you from pulling the trigger?

  3. Sigh, I do share your dreams. I love tap pants and I do love the romper. However, I hate the full slip. I did have to wear one of those when I was younger, but I do like the 1/2 slip with matching bra!

Your Anthro picks are gorgeous and would be super gift items!

  4. Yep, NoJCrewinJapan, to the outfit. For instance, I wore this set under JCrew's vintage fleur top. Perhaps, i'm a little OCD where undies are concerned, but my love of lingerie is like shoes are to some. :)

  6. Cleo26, I would say OCD but one where some of us may find admirable!! We all have our thing!

I forgot to say, Kathy, LOL to your mention of the slip!

  7. LOL, this is my dream too! And try as I might, I never achieve it. And yes, Anthro's loungewear and intimates section kills me (though usually none of their little bralette tops are supportive enough for me so I don't even bother putting those sets on my virtual wishlist...though the bottoms sometimes make it on there...thereby circumventing my matching top-and-bottom-dream yet *again*! Sigh.)
I tried that Resting on Water slip in the store the other week -- so pretty! It has such a 1920's vibe to it.

  8. Oh this is a fun topic because it came up at dinner last night. We were talking about under garments and colors. I generally stick to all nudes or blacks because it's easy. I don't own a single fun colored bra. I used to and never wore them so I just stopped spending the money on them. I'm much more into what I'm wearing on the outside and just want to be comfortable underneath.

Cleo26, now I know what you were wearing under your clothes last night, LOL. Very pretty set.

  9. goldenmeans, I didn't think about that with the tops, because the "ladies" have never been an issue, though I see how frustrating it can be that your dreams are foiled! I do think the slip has a 1920s vibe to it, too, which makes me want to read Great Gatsby or watch french films. LOL.

Summerilla, I'm the same way! I have no fun or unique anything, everything is black white or nude. There is not one print in the whole drawer. But this is not to say that I'm matchy matchy, more so I'm matchy matchy by default because they're all the same color. Still, I totally wish I had fun pieces!

  10. I am so boring with my undergarments. It seems like I have enough trouble just putting together the basic boring undergarment wardrobe without expanding it to such lovelies. But I do need to try...one of these days.

Have you seen Cleo26's new blog? Fabilis and right on topic!!

  11. Heidi I totally know what you mean. I want to be *girl* but I just don't know if I ever will! I strive though! I saw Cleo26's blog and how fabs is that? I like to think the topic here was just what she needed to get her to start it! :-) & to think I wouldn't think anyone would want to talk about this, either. I almost deleted the post altogether right after I put it up.
