What do we think of this?

Perusing the new arrivals at J.Crew online, I have come across this. No, I am not dating the piece. I'm wondering how wearable this is. I am partial to the Jersey Lomelina boy shorts they are showing, or the French Sailor maillot, realistically speaking. But I keep looking at these, which J.Crew says was inspired by bloomers.

I have to get ready for work, and fix up my baby boy with some breakfast, but I had to drop a line say WTF. Because part of me wishes I was uber skinny enough to pull off a look like this. That's the fashion forward side of me. & the other side is in a conundrum of wearability questions. It's like a catch-22: If you are bottom heavy, you will be attracted to this, because it covers well (obviously). But I think it will look better on a rail thin body, like the model's. The issue is that if you are rail thin, would you wear this? Or would you be in your typical 2 piece, showing off what your momma gave ya?

Just some thoughts for an early Friday morning.

Have a great one, ladies!

  1. Girllllll,
Right now the only thing I can think is that it's weird! Maybe in a month or so I get use to it.
Good find .... he he he!

  2. Oh my gosh, no! You are totally right, this is nothing but a cruel cruel joke. I personally love '50s style bikinis that have high-tummy coverage: cute and concealing, some might say life-saving. However this drawstring-waist business is pretty appalling. I think it might make most look like they were wearing a diaper or something -- even the skinny-minny model, she, well, she just looks *okay* I think. She would definitely be showing off her figure in another rocking bikini (even another fuller-coverage-but-more-flattering-one) if she had a choice. Also, on a purely aesthetic level, I am pretty confused by the skinniness/skimpiness of the straps and the triangles up top in contrast to heavier bottoms below.

  3. 2 words: granny & panties. I don't even like this look hidden under my clothes. And the bow is supposed to legitimize the look? Riiiiight.

  4. Ooooh, I don't think it looks good on the super skinny model! I do enjoy the fifties look, but not this one!

  5. Oh, yeah, that one had me on the floor this morning, too. :)

    Yuck.

There is another one with the bow at the center front of the bikini bottom and it reminds me of a "gift-wrapped" present. Slightly to Victoria's Secret for my tastes. (Shudder...)

  6. LOL, I've put on some weight, so I would sport this and blame the suit for my unsightly wobbly bits. It's not me, it's the suit!

  9. That image just ruined my visual high from the gorgeousness in J. Crew's new arrivals. Argggh!

It's like a diaper meets granny underpants meets bikini-short. No. No. No.

  11. Ladies you all hit the nail on the head with Granny Panties and Diapers. That's what these are!

@goldenmeans - YES! What is up with the teeny tiny string top and the crazy whacked out bottoms??

@Jemma Ruby - $9.99 is soooo in the cards for this one! The question is, how soon? :-)

  12. my first thought was granny underwear! they don't even look flattering on the model so i'm wondering how they would look on an average person at the beach.
