Sequin Versatility is not an Oxymoron

Peek a boo. I see you.

The Downtown Look:
In the worst ways of indebtedness I owe this post on the J.Crew Stardust Pencil Skirt in the Gunmetal color. I first blogged about wondering why I like this skirt here, and then after receiving the skirt, I blogged about that here. Well, I've finally come around to creating some outfits with the skirt that I can't wait to wear out.

The Downtown Look:

J.Crew Stardust Pencil Skirt in Gunmetal
J.Crew Textured Jersey Silk Corsage tee in White
Joe's Jeans Denim Jacket
J.Crew Pearl Cluster bracelet
J.Crew Cluster Ring
J.Crew Pearl necklace
Alfani (Macy's) Black Lace Peep Toe heel with Black rhinestones
Black silk & glass pearl clutch, Japanese boutique and Valentine's Day gift from Hubs

I thought it would be interesting to do two-part post on a "downtown" & "uptown" look each for the skirt. You know, make my conscience feel better about buying the sequin thing and proving its versatility. Yes, this sounds weird. But sequin skirts sooo can be versatile.

The Uptown Look:
This look is so simple and yes, very cardi party, but you know, that's me. I feel safe and secure and I think the cardigan brings something proper and very proprietary to any outfit I'm wearing. For this look I went a very simple and choose to accessorize with just a cute little belt.

The Uptown Look:

J.Crew Stardust Pencil Skirt in Gunmetal
No Name Black Camisole
J.Crew Maya Cardigan in Black
J.Crew Satin Rosette Tie Belt in black and grey from Fall 08
J.Crew Cluster Ring
J.Crew Pearl Cluster Bracelet
Alfani (Macy's) Black Lace Peep Toe heel with Black rhinestones
Black silk & glass pearl clutch, Japanese boutique and Valentine's Day gift from Hubs

I apologize for the un-photoshopped / non-cropped photos. I am in limbo at the moment as both my hard drive and external hard drive are full (pack rat, you can say it). My situation is so dire, I can't even crop out that bra that is in this photo above or put those cute little frames around the photos that I've started to recently do. (But we're all great friends and if you came over, that bra would probably still be there) As I am a technically stunted gal, I am waiting for Hubs to swoop in and save the day and "fix" this. Melodramatic but true. Hopefully by tomorrow, I won't be in such a pinch. I also couldn't wait any longer to show you these IRLs and didn't think you'd mind the little distractions in the background.

UPDATE: Ladies, I am the owner of a 1 TB (is that even technically correct?) external hard drive. I never thought I'd see the day. See what an iTunes addiction gets ya??

Well, with that said, which look did you like best?

  1. You look so cute! I didn't even notice anything in the background because I was looking at the skirt! Didn't like it for me, but it's so cute on you & Summerilla. I really love it w/the denim jacket. So cute :-) Glad one of the 2 you ordered worked out for you.

  6. The skirt looks fab. Love both looks.

I finally got to see the object of your affection IRL this weekend at the Cherry Hill, NJ J. Crew. I totally thought of you - and I don't even know you. Ha ha.

I hope you wear it well in Paris. You are taking that fierceness to Paris, right? Right??!! Although, no one from the City of Lights will probably even look your way. But all the Americans, Brits and other touristas will probably LOVE your ensemble.

  7. Thanks to all of you, ladies, for the great input and comments. I love seeing what you all have to say.

Susan you crack me up! I totally think of peeps from the blogworld when I run into things in the real world that remind me of you. I hadn't thought about taking the skirt to Paris, mainly b/c, well, I have no idea why. Thanks for the idea and helping me plan!

  8. I like the uptown look better (I'm not sure that I like the denim jacket with this skirt or maybe it's just because the downtown outfit looks too summery at this time of the year). Enjoy it, it's a beautiful skirt. I ended up cancelling my order (it was waitlisted until Xmas anyway), I would have nowhere to go in my sequins...

  9. Hi Ema, thanks - it probably is that this time of year should call for something less casual but outside right now where I am is still 70 degrees! I liked the denim one because it felt fun. But I liked the uptown look because it felt more comfortable in black. ACK. I need to add some color to my life!

  10. Love both od your looks! Good inspiration for me. I am trying to figure out what to do with my skirt besides wear it to a holiday party a la your uptown look. Any other ideas? :)

Love the Maya. I haven't even opened mine yet from Sept! How is yours wearing? I keep reading mixed reviews on JCA about it pilling and such, which is why mine is still in its plastic....

  11. You are making me want that skirt in a really bad way. A REALLY BAD WAY! And I know that they carry it in my B&M store, so this is just bad news for me, haha... Seriously - you look amazing in it! I thought it would look way too "showgirl" in real life, but you manage to make it look just plain old gorgeous! I love the uptown look the most - the black pairing just makes this stunning!

  12. mommydearest, I am obsessed with the Maya. I have it in every color except the yellow. I think it's softer than other merino cardis from years past and the drape is extra flattering on me who has no defined waist. It is not cute worn open though. You have to wear it closed. :-P
I think the skirt is so cute, I would wear it to dinner with the grey or black maya and just keep the rest of the outfit monochromatic. I think an evening out with the girls warrants sequins! :-)

Amy I know you need this skirt. I hate to be the bad influence (well, not really :-) but I have to tell you I love it. No, it won't be worn in heavy rotation and yes the cost per wear will be high. But it is a really cute skirt, not showgirl-y at all. It's very tame. RAWR.

  13. the skirt looks great on you! i tried it on again this past weekend and just couldn't find a place to wear it, but i still like it! maybe if it goes on sale but i doubt i'll be able to wait that long! hehe.

  14. Tippy that's the same way I felt about the skirt too. I kept looking at it going, "shya, when am I EVER wearing that?" & then going back to the site to ogle it. I finally admitted the feelings I had for it and am a happy camper now! Pull the trigger! :-)

  15. Ahh, I love that sequin skirt!! I am totally the girl that will wear sequins during the day. I have a bunch of sparkly tops, but I've been looking into sparkly skirts, and dare I say it, shorts even.

  16. ro, thanks for stopping by and commenting. shorts even!! This is hard core. Sequins are totally apropo for the day. Love the idea of sequins mixed in with casual pieces. I think that's why I love J.Crew. I love Jenna Lyons' take on that.
